Using a free-flowing, interpretive style, Modern is a form of dance which focuses on the expression of inner emotions. When modern dance first came on the scene at the turn of the 20th century, it was considered radical and iconoclastic. As life around the world went through dramatic change, dancers began to feel the rules and rigidity of classical ballet were too restricting. Soon a new free-flowing style of dance began to develop. It was knows as "modern," to distinguish itself from classical ballet.
