As a kid, I loved to perform. Give me the spotlight, and I was at home! I may have not been the best technical dancer, but I knew how to make the faces and bring the energy. Some of my best memories were made on the Dobson High School Auditorium stage hamming it up with my friends. Luckily, I have these memories caught on my recital DVD and could (did) watch them over and over and over. I even learned the older girls' dances too! Who needs Disney movies when I can watch dance performances?!
Dancing in the recital was always my favorite, and I go back and watch some of my old performances still; from my tiny ballet days when I spent more time staring at the other girls than dancing to my senior year of high school choking up as my friends and I danced together for the last time. It's harder to remember these performances the older I get, so having them on tape is that much more special. I hope you've ordered your DVD already, but if not, the price goes up on May 1st! You can order it online at www.dvphd.com or pick up an order form at the studio. Don't miss out on the opportunity to keep those memories close for years to come! -- Miss Shannon We're getting ready for our two fantastic performances coming up in a few weeks! Jeanne's Musical Theater Company's performance of "Alice In Wonderland" on May 30th and our studio recital "Dancing ON AIR" on June 6th. Time has flown by and your kids have been amazing, working so hard all year to perform for you in our end of season performances. In all the excitement there's probably a swarm of butterflies or two going around little tummies creating nervousness. It's totally normal--but here's some steps to help calm those jitters down. 1. Explain that what they are feeling is normal. Try to avoid saying "Don't worry about it" or "You'll be find." Be empathetic and ask how you can help them figure out a way for them to feel better. Practice at home with your child before "Stage Time" in a stress-free setting, like with an audience of stuffed animals.
2. Dr. Carla Fry, child psychologist, urges parents to be empathetic and understanding but not to allow their child to run away or avoid the situation. "The focus should be on building up kids' resilience." Focus on the child's efforts they've made (doing their best in class every week) rather than the outcome (they have become the next Baryshnikov). 3. Take her seriously. If she says she's afraid she'll mess up, don't dismiss her concerns. Soothe her fears with something like "I'm sure the other kids will be worried too. But you've practiced a lot and I'll be proud of you no matter what!" All of us at Jeanne's are here to walk you and your dancer step by step through this process! We've seen little ones cry through dress rehearsal and steal the show during the performance that night! We want everyone to feel comfortable and proud of all they've learned this year! If there's anything we can do to help you or your dancer prepare for these upcoming performances just let us know!
